A hull extension can be as simple as a bolt-on extension to move your outboards aft of your cockpit for some extra room to adding 6 feet to a motoryacht including a remodel and a repower. Adding to to your hull length is often more efficient, especially with older yachts. The least expensive type of extension is the addition of a swim platform or an open cockpit to the original transom. A more complex project might include curving staircases and an overhang over the extended section. One type of hull extension is attached at an appropriate distance above the hull bottom surface to the stern of a planing vessel so as to be at least partially submerged at subplaning speeds and totally unsubmerged at planing speeds,

effectively increasing hull length at subplaning speeds while not affecting hull length at planing speeds. A "step" effect is thus featured whereby the hull extension is not in contact with the water once planing commences. Hydrodynamic and buoyant efficiency is increased by the hull extension at subplaning speeds and unaffected thereby at planing speeds.
