Zincs

Zincs are critical for preventing galvanic corrosion caused by
dissimilar metals that can quickly
destroy underwater metal
hardware such as drive lines,
propellers, and lower units.
Cap Sante Marine can check and
replace worn zincs, virtually
eliminating costly damage.

Whenever dissimilar metals attached to your vessel become emersed in sea water, they actually become a battery. The resulting electrical connection causes electrons of one metal to be given up to this process. This is called galvanic corrosion. Propellers, drive shafts, metal struts, rudders, rudder fittings, outboards, and stern drives are all at risk. By adding a sacrificial metal (such as Zinc) that gives up its electrons to this process more readily,

prevents damage to your valuable hardware by being "eaten up" before the other metals are effected. These sacrificial metal fittings are typically referred to as "zincs". The materials used in a through-hull fitting is critical as well. While metals are stronger than plastics, they are susceptibile to corrosion or galvanic action. Plastic fittings are corrosion-resistant, but can be compromised by UV exposeure or impact fracture.

The best way to ensure that your through-hull fittings are installed and maintained properly is to take advantage of the professional services of Cap Sante Marine. Whether you are week-end sailor in the San Juan Islands, or maintaing your yach for extended Pacific Northwest cruising, you can rest assuerd that the trained professionals at Cap Sante Marine will do the job right.
